Flint currently has two high schools, but not for long. As one school prepares to close its doors in 2018, the athletics programs from two rival schools were combined one year prior to stay competitive. Flint Northwestern High School and Southwestern Classical Academy joined together to create the city’s first lone football team in nearly 90 years. Their name: The Flint Jaguars. And while the city of nearly 100,000 falls to disrepair through blighted neighborhoods and a high violent crime rate, the team was tasked at setting a standard for their classmates before the schools merger. In true nature of the city’s form, players displayed toughness, growing through challenges of starting positions and a tenacious spirit. Even though the team carried a losing 3-6 record, its motto stood tall in building the boys’ character. One team, one pride.
